regain (pour Alan Johnson)

Installation éphémère (40m x 20m; 69 drapeaux, 69 bambous, 120 piquets bois, regain d’herbe), et Flashmingo (happening/flash-parade-nuptiale) pour le Château d’Avignon et les Journées du Patrimoine
Regain est un hommage à Alan Johnson. En 1961, “Monsieur Flamant” arrive en Camargue pour un stage de trois mois. Il y demeurera jusqu’à son décès en décembre 2014. À l’époque, la désertion des sites de nidification mettait l’espèce en danger dans l’ensemble du bassin méditerranéen. Avec le soutien de Luc Hoffmann et de la Tour du Valat, il construisit un îlot sur l’étang de Fangassier (situé à quelques kilomètres du château). Grâce à son intervention, les flamants revinrent nicher sur le site après une décennie d’absence, et la Camargue devint leur principal site de reproduction en Europe… Regain s’est offert à l’action du temps et aux caprices de la météo : la bande sonore (cris de flamants enregistrés sur le Fangassier) et les drapeaux ont été sculptés par les vents ; le soleil et la pluie ont changé le poids et la couleur du tissu ; et le regain du foin autour de cet îlot éphémère a fini par l’engloutir. Regain joue sur le fragile équilibre qui existe entre une nature imprévisible et l’intervention humaine : une relation instable et souvent contrariée mais parfois réellement bénéfique.
Ils ont dit que c'était trop con pour être vrai... Et peut-être ils avaient raison. Mais bon, pour fêter les journées du patrimoine, les deux mois de leur œuvre éphémère Regain et la beauté imbécile de leurs amis les flamants roses, gethan&myles ont créé le Flashmingo : flash mob culturo-pedigocico-choréo-con autour de la parade nuptiale dudit oiseau (Attention : en espagnol le flamant c'est el flamenco...). Pendant un weekend, et pour la première (et dernière !) fois, un public très partant a flashmingué comme des pros.
Bonne nouvelle ! Cette année les flamants sont retournés nicher sur l'étang du Fangassier. Les artistes affirment que, sans l’ombre d’un doute, c’est grâce au travail des flashmingueurs.

Regain is a hommage to the improbable glory of the flamingo – and to the amazing life of Alan Johnson who died in December 2014. Johnson, aka ‘Monsieur Flamingo’, devoted his life to these birds following a three month trip to the Camargue that ended up lasting over 50 years. In 1961 an untrained but enthusiastic Johsnon arrived in the Camargue; at that time the abandonning of nesting sites endangered the existence of the flamingo in the entire Mediterraneen region. A chance encounter with ornithologist (and millionaire!) Luc Hoffmann, allowed Johnson to build an island complete with ready-made flamingo (love-)nests in the middle of the Fangassier lake (found near the Château). Thanks to Johnson’s passion, humility and doggedness this conservationist-earthwork helped save the European flamingo from extinction… Regain was shaped by the weather and the passage of time: the sound track (flamingo mating calls recorded on the Fangassier) and the flags where sculpted by the winds; the sun and rain changed the weight and colour of the fabric; and the second growth of the hay (‘aftermath’ in English, ‘regain’ in French) ultimately engulfed this transient island. Regain is inspired both by Johnson, and by the fragile balance between unpredictable nature and human intervention: an unstable relationship which is often imperfect, but sometimes genuinely positive.
They said it was too stupid to exist! And they were probably right. But hey, to celebrate European Heritage Day, their ongoing ephemeral work Regain and the foolish beauty of their beloved flamingos, gethan&myles created the Flashmingo: a fusion of high-brow and mono-brow, long-neck, red-neck and pink-neck, dance, prance and double-barreled-chance - but, if they're honest, mostly of the flashmob and the mating dance of the flamingo. It was good. You should have been there.
