Kaskáda et Pohodlnà Stagnàcia (stagnation confortable)

Après trois mois d'ateliers avec divers groupes de la ville (centres communautaires, associations pour personnes âgées, jardins partagés, centres de jeunesse, cafés, crèches et un collège pour les Roms locaux), gethan&myles ont peint Kaskáda sur la façade de la grande brasserie à l'entrée de la ville. Composée des paroles de 120 habitants de Košice, Kaskáda revisite la célèbre armoirie de la ville (la plus ancienne d'Europe) et nous interroge sur l'identité - d'un lieu, de ses habitants - et les symboles qui la représentent. Cette cascade dorée de texte slovaque se compose de trois éléments : animal, plante et ligne / chemins ; faisant écho à l'aigle, à la fleur de lys et aux quatre bandes colorées de l’armoirie de la ville. Chaque élément est suivi d'une courte phrase qui illumine le choix du symbole. Alors que chaque motif héraldique fut « offert » à la ville par un roi qui n'y avait jamais mis les pieds, les paroles des habitants offrent ici une multitude d'armoiries contradictoires, à la fois amusantes, poétiques, pessimistes, fières et surtout démocratiques. Ainsi, Košice se transforme en panda (stupide et lent), en lionne (farouchement protectrice), en rivière (toujours en mouvement), en pomme de terre (lourde et fade), en marron (épineux à l'extérieur, mais généreux à l’intérieur) et beaucoup plus… Une sérigraphie de l’ensemble des textes a été distribuée à tous les groupes participants, et un site web slovaque-anglais mis en ligne. Pour le festival Nuit Blanche 2014 les artistes ont présenté Pohodlnà Stagnàcia - une installation / projection dans la caserne désaffectée de Bastova, Košice (extrait du diaporama ci-dessous). Fabriquée avec des images d’animaux, plantes et chemins prises durant leurs trois mois à Košice, un enregistrement de la fameuse Fontaine Chantante de Košice ‘chantant’ Another day in Paradise et de vieilles briques récupérées dans la caserne et maintenant utilisées pour la convertir en appartements de luxe, Pohodlnà Stagnàcia examine l’histoire, l’identitié et le renouveau, et fait écho à Kaskáda.

Kaskáda and Pohodlnà Stagnàcia (comfortable stagnation)

Following three months of workshops with a variety of groups (community centres, old people’s clubs, community gardens, youth centres, cafés, nurseries and a college for the local Roma) we painted Kaskáda on the facade of the brewery at the entrance to the town. Created from the words of 120 of Košice’s inhabitants, Kaskáda revisits the famous town coat of arms (the oldest in Europe) and explores identity – of a place, of its people – and the symbols used to represent it. This golden cascade of Slovakian text is made up of three elements: animal, plant and lines / paths; mirroring the eagle, fleur-de-lys and four coloured bands of the town’s crest. Each element is followed by a short phrase which illuminates the choice of symbol. While each heraldic motif was ‘gifted’ to the town by a king who had never even set foot there, here the words of the people offer up an array of conflicting coats of arms that are simultaneously amusing, poetic, pessimistic, proud and above all democratic. Thus, Košice becomes a panda (stupid and slow), a lioness (fiercely protective), a river (always moving), a potato (stodgy and bland) a horse-chestnut (spiky on the outside, but rewarding within) and much more… A limited-edition screenprint of the entire work was distributed among all participating groups, and a Slovak-English website put online. For the White Night festival 2014 we created Pohodlnà Stagnàcia - a projection and installation in the abandoned barracks in Bastova, Košice (extract of slideshow below). Using images of animals, plants and lines/pathways taken during our three months in Košice, a recording of the town’s surprisingly popular Singing Fountain ‘singing’ Another day in Paradise and beautiful old bricks recovered from the barracks and now being used to convert it into luxury appartments Pohodlnà Stagnàcia examines history, identity and change, and was an echo of Kaskáda.
