Dès leur première visite à l’hôpital psychiatrique de Laragne-Montéglin (CHBD) et suite à leurs échanges avec l’équipe soignante, gethan&myles ont été frappés par le cadre particulier de cet ‘hôpital-village’ novateur : perché entre vallée et montagne, eau, terre et ciel, la question de frontière - géographique mais aussi psychique - se pose : si l’on se retrouve d’un côté d’une frontière, comment fait-on signe à celles et ceux qui sont de l’autre côté ? Le cœur du projet - et du site - est une vieille cabine téléphonique laissée à l’abandon depuis longtemps (l’hôpital est un modèle peu connu d’architecture moderniste). Transformée en point d’accueil, d’échange et de co-création, cette sculpture vivante est activée par les ateliers avec les usagers de l’hôpital et son équipe ainsi que des rencontres spontanées. Elle devient à la fois socle, scène et sémaphore. Ensemble ils créent un espace ouvert et vivant, débordant d’idées et de revendications, ainsi que plusieurs moyens d’exprimer ces réflexions, inspirés du langage architectural, naturel et médical du site : un nouveau Code international des signaux maritimes (27 pavillons et 27 nouvelles significations propres, cyanotypes sur papier et sur draps d’hôpital usagés, réalisées avec les formes architecturales des résidences - dites ‘pavillons’ - du site) et un nouvel Alphabet radiotéléphonique international (26 nouveaux codes acrophoniques, performance sur la cabine avec 4 nouveaux drapeaux : cyanotypes sur draps usagés avec cannes abandonnées repeintes).
J’ai adoré la production artistique et tout autant l’énergie qu’ils y ont mis, le goût du partage et la gaieté qui émane d’eux.

From their very first visit to the Laragne-Montéglin psychiatric hospital gethan&myles were struck by the unique setting of this innovative ‘hôpital-village’: perched between valley and mountain, water, earth and sky, the question of borders - both geographical and psychological - arose. If we find ourselves on one side of a border, how do we signal to those on the other side? The heart of the project - and the site - is an old telephone box that has been abandoned for many years (the hospital is a little-known model of modernist architecture). Transformed into a meeting and a making place, this living sculpture was activated by workshops with patients and staff, and by spontaneous meetings and exchanges. It became at once a plinth, a stage and a signal tower. Together they created an open, living space overflowing with ideas and questions, as well as several means of expressing these reflections, inspired by the natural, built and human environment: a new International Maritime Signal Flags (27 new flags and 27 new ICS meanings; cyanotypes on paper and on old hospital sheets, produced in workshops using the architectural forms of the patient residencies across the site) and a new International Radiotelephony Alphabet (26 new acrophonic code words and performance on the phone kiosk using 4 new flags: cyanotypes on old hospital sheets with painted abandoned walking sticks).
I loved the artwork - but equally the energy they put into it, their openness to sharing and the joy that emanates from them.
